Ideas for our Digipak

For the album cover we plan to have something which represents the 'inside of a human body'
for e.g. the ribcage below

We then decided to put flowers inside of the rib cage, which would come out on top. The flowers connote nature, love; which links back to the theme of some of the songs on the album which are love.

We then wanted to conform to the conventions of other indie album covers which feature the name to be big, bold, and the first thing the audience sees.
We plan to put the artist name on top and the album name at the bottom in a smaller font.

Magazine Research

We have chosen to use 'The Guardian' as our magazine platform, therefore the album advert will appear on 'The Guardian'.

Justification

The guardian have reviewed 'Saint Raymond' an indie artist, and other similar indie artists like 'Lana Del Rey' and 'Bastille'.

Saint Raymond
http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/jan/27/saint-raymond

Saint Raymond is the real artist of our chosen song 'As We Are Now'. The Guardian has promoted him showing their interst on similar artists of the same genre - indie.

Another example is Lana Del Rey

In this example The Guardian is promoting Lana Del Rey's new music. She's an indie artist which therefore links back to the fact that The Guardian promote and review indie artists.

Target Audience for the Guardian tend to be middle class, educated people who have secured their livelihood comfortably in Britian.
The Target Audience for our artist is 16-28 year olds. This therefore has a link with the guardian as people aged 23-28 would probably have a degree or some form of higher education and therefore the target audience for the guardian links with the target audience for our artist.

London Night Filming

We went out to film the rest of our music video in central London. Since we previously filmed all of our footage in the daytime, the next step or our developed idea as I could say was filming during the night. The filming took place at a foreshore in Southbank and was later used as the performance shots. The filming was rather successful as we got to record the whole song twice from 4 various angles which contributed to our piece. We were also able to record some rough 360 degrees shots that after editing looked really jumpy but pleasant.  However, we did face some problems; we filmed during the night which meant that the shots were usually under-lit and the quality of the footage was quite poor despite the good angles.  Another problem we faced was the weather; the wind was quite strong and occasional showers caught us which got the camera glass as well as us wet- this was an issue as the artist was supposed to look sharp and neat in his suit. Despite all that I believe that the filming was successful as we not only got the footage we needed but also experimented with the focus ring as well as the low angle

Audience Feedback 1

After filming the music video, we began to edit it and consequently we created a ruff cut of the video.
We showed this ruff cut to an audience of people in order to receive feedback.

Audience Member - Sam (Media Teacher)
Feedback Received:

  • The visuals in the video are very selected; for example the first verse has the tunnel location the second has the beach and the last bit has the night location - you don't have to have such selected visuals; in a music video things can be split up and some shots can also be repeated.
  • Because of the segmented visuals it feels as though the video drags

Audience Member - Tom (Target Market - aged 18)
Feedback Received:
  • I love the visual metaphors; like using the fence as a jail and the performer is behind it as if to say his life is a jail
  • I love how the visuals match the tone of the music - e.g. the ocean with the tune of the slow paced guitar
  • I really like the home footage effect - comes across more personal as if were seeing into his past
Audience Member - Sam (Target Market - aged 18)
Feedback Received:
  • Really like how we used the cross dissolve effect between shots as it fits well with the emotional music
  • Really like the visual metaphors
  • Love the beach shots with the home footage effect - makes it feel more personal and makes us invest more into the story line and emotions of the artist
